Built in 1957, the Witthoefft House was listed National Register of Historic Places in 2011. For this incredible Mid-Century Modern design, the home’s original owner and architect, Arthur Witthoefft won the American Institute of Architects‘ (AIA) First Honor Award in 1962. This was a far cry from the day when an Armonk local walked up during construction and asked Witthoefft if he was crazy thinking he could build a motel in such a remote corner of Westchester County.

Witthoefft lived in his remarkable home until 1989, when he sold the place, not knowing that the structure would fall into disrepair waiting for the developers’ axe until two young visionaries took ownership with the dream to restore every foot of this historic home to its original condition, under the guidance of Witthoefft who was living in Florida at the time. Since then the home has been featured numerous times in Architectural publications, many as the “house of month,” and so on.

Such a restoration would not have been possible had the structure been built of ordinary materials instead of the brick and steel that Witthoefft insisted on using. Modernist, Vuko Tashkovich was obsessed with light from his youth in Macedonia, surrounded by Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic architecture – to his future where his obsession would be confirmed working for enlightened masters like Eliot Noyes and I. M. Pei. Yet Tashkovich’s desire for freedom of expression eventually drove him to venture out on his own path. After all, he was the son of famous partisan and outspoken critic of Tito’s communist regime. Thankfully Eleanor Roosevelt intervened in 1947, enabling the Tashkovich family to enter the US.

Frustrated with the mundane tasks of the “builder” demands on architects of Mid-Century Modern design, of which his wife and equal, Stephanie took control, the young master eventually landed in Pound Ridge in Westchester County, NY where he created twenty-eight stunning homes.
