Why choose a Mid-Century Modern Specialist as Your Agent?

Ellen Hilburg and Andrea Martone offer a unique vision of Mid-Century Modern Homes. They have an unusual passion for the history, architecture and the designer/architects of the mid-century contemporary homes in the lower Hudson River region of New York.

Together they will become your “personal shoppers,” opting to show your the best listings as they pop up on the market. Remember, not all Mid-Century homes are the treasures you’d hope to expect.  Some have been “updated” so much that the original beauty cannot be rediscovered. Others have become orphans of style in the midst of deteriorating or vastly changed locations. We will pass on knowledge not only of period design, but of location, the state of repair/disrepair, and the value of your investment.

Whenever one comes up for sale, buyers have a unique opportunity to reside in a home with modern beauty and history of Usonia, as featured below…

Theodore “Ted” Dixon Bower began his training at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin School of Architecture. After graduation, and he worked as one of the key Mid Century Modern designers of Usonia, NY. Later, he ventured to Europe and to India, where he was employed as a “Jr. Architect” for the State of Punjab. “Toyhill,” or the Mid-Century Modern marvel known as the Sol Friedman House, was the first of the three Frank Lloyd Wright homes built in his dream community of Usonia in Pleasantville, NY. Marked by its three mushroom-like concrete slabs – two on the house and one covering the garage port – the home’s fort-like stonework and circular window walls rise up amid surrounding hardwoods, as if the place was planted by hand.

Styled as part of an “organic community,” this magnificent house has withstood the test of time and remains as breathtaking as the day the Friedman family moved in. And it can be yours…

Presenting home-as-art, an innovative overlapping circular masonry design uniting structure and nature. “Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together.”

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe – Modernist Pioneer

__________________________________________________________

Built in 1957, the Witthoefft House was listed National Register of Historic Places in 2011. For this incredible Mid-Century Modern design, the home’s original owner and architect, Arthur Witthoefft won the American Institute of Architects‘ (AIA) First Honor Award in 1962. This was a far cry from the day when an Armonk local walked up during construction and asked Witthoefft if he was crazy thinking he could build a motel in such a remote corner of Westchester County.

Witthoefft lived in his remarkable home until 1989, when he sold the place, not knowing that the structure would fall into disrepair waiting for the developers’ axe until two young visionaries took ownership with the dream to restore every foot of this historic home to its original condition, under the guidance of Witthoefft who was living in Florida at the time. Since then the home has been featured numerous times in Architectural publications, many as the “house of month,” and so on.

Such a restoration would not have been possible had the structure been built of ordinary materials instead of the brick and steel that Witthoefft insisted on using. And if the idea of living in a Modernist masterpiece with the utmost provenance stirs your soul, we suggest you act now and request a personal showing.

Imagine a Modernist Amalgam Designed by the Incredible Richard Meier / Restored by the Celebrated Fashion Designer, Norma Kamali

Architect and future Pritzker winner, Richard Meier built the Shamberg House in 1974. An early precursor to his Getty Center in Los Angeles, words do little to describe this seven-acre compound that combines the abstract with the practical forms of Mid-Century Modern design.  Partly inspired by the provocative style of Le Corbusier, the Shamberg House is one of modernist homes that Meier coined as his “white villas.” Meier has stated that the adjacent cottage was intended to be used as a guesthouse, while the white villa serves as a full time residence and gathering place, each with sweeping hilltop views.

Acclaimed fashion designer, Norma Kamali took ownership in 2008 and immediately went to work inspired by her desire to ‘blur the lines between architecture, design, and fashion,” using touches like Chesca Chairs designed by modernist and Bauhaus protégé, Marcel Breuer. Her unique touches on the house have been featured in print and online articles.

This accidental convergence of designers has set the stage for a rare opportunity to own what is one of the most profound residences in the nation, best revealed to you through the expert eyes of the modernist experts at Mid-Century Modern, Hudson Valley.

From the Architect who Grew Up Amid the Illuminated Temples, Mosques, Minarets and Monasteries of the Ancient World

Modernist, Vuko Tashkovich was obsessed with light from his youth in Macedonia, surrounded by Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic architecture – to his future where his obsession would be confirmed working for enlightened masters like Eliot Noyes and I. M. Pei. Yet Tashkovich’s desire for freedom of expression eventually drove him to venture out on his own path. After all, he was the son of famous partisan and outspoken critic of Tito’s communist regime. Thankfully Eleanor Roosevelt intervened in 1947, enabling the Tashkovich family to enter the US.

Frustrated with the mundane tasks of the “builder” demands on architects of Mid-Century Modern design, of which his wife and equal, Stephanie took control, the young master eventually landed in Pound Ridge in Westchester County, NY where he created twenty-eight stunning homes.

All of them created to welcome light into every living space, like the sprawling Derow House set on close to three acres of Chappaqua woods. Let the experts at Mid-Century Modern, Hudson Valley show you all the stunning details.

The Derow House is one of 57 designed by the architect and is beautifully sited on 2.75 private acres of breathtaking grounds. This home's social spaces, including an inviting step-down living room overlooks manicured grounds through floor to ceiling walls of glass. Tashkovich's semicircular glass dining nook in the kitchen, and the dramatic contrast of two ceiling heights in the living room are just two of many signature elements found inside. The modernized kitchen is wonderful for entertaining and flows beautifully into social rooms. An upper level master suite is brilliant in placement, positioned for privacy, though convenient to the family-guest wing with three bedrooms, den and two private baths. For outdoor fun enjoy park-like grounds leading to a Har-Tru tennis court. Secluded, yet minutes away from Metro north, shopping and restaurants. Live the good life!

Another Chance to Own A Mid-Century Home with Unusual Provenance

Architect and innovator, Edward Durell Stone ranks among a list of front-runners, like Nicola Tesla, despised by many of his peers for his modernistic vision, yet undeniably revered for his achievements such as Radio City Music Hall, the Modern Museum of Art and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In 2012, Mary Anne Hunting published a book on Edward Stone, that featured scabrous criticism from the likes of Tom Wolfe, who like so many others worked to drive Stone into a form of self-imposed obscurity. This led him into a period where ended up entering architecture contests for magazines like Colliers that led him to pursue seemingly mundane home building projects, that were uplifted by the use of modern materials in the creation of floor-to-ceiling windows using simple barn-framing, and Mies/Bauhaus-inspired atria instead of ordinary hallways, as have been built into this extraordinary Mid-Century Modern home that you can own now.

Be assured, as the Mid-Century revival flourishes, so will the value of Edward Durell Stone’s work increase, as the world walks away from the unfair criticism of his past.

Before Ferdinand Gottlieb became a modernist architect in the lower Hudson valley, his family had to escape from Nazi Germany, relocating in British Palestine before he emigrated to the U.S. in 1937, and then he became a decorated WWII veteran serving in the intelligence for the Army Air Corps. One might guess that such a history had an impact on his designs, which it did with many superb Manhattan buildings, including his renowned Rizzoli Bookstore on Fifth Avenue. And as well as with this stunning Marlborough Road home that stands up to the Gottlieb credo of “never using mass produced materials just to make ends meet.”
